Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question please contact by email. This page will be updated with common questions.

Q. Where can I play and are there teams forming in my area?
A1. If you are a member of a flat track roller derby league you can probably find friends who would love to try this sport during practice or between games during an exhibition bout.
A2. If you are not part of derby, your best bet is to talk to skating rinks in your area. Check the GoogleMap on our Rinks & Leagues page. However, just because you don’t see your rink listed does not mean that management would not be interested in hosting some games.

Q. How can I find more teammates and opponents?
A. All you need is four friends to join you and start a team. Making a video of your game to upload will attract attention. If you have more than one skating rink in your area issue a challenge: Your rink’s team(s) against theirs.

Q. Do I have to use foam balls to play?
A. Yes. If you want to play official Roller Dodge you must use foam balls. Naturally you can play a different version of dodgeball or even make up your own rules but the whole point of this website is to offer a comprehensive and standard set of rules that you can play against anybody, anywhere.

Q. Where can I buy the foam balls?
A. See this page for details: Foam Balls

Q. Can I rent the foam balls at the skating rink?
A. Maybe. We certainly encourage the skating rinks to buy one or more sets that players can rent for a few hours when they are still new to the sport. Eventually you’ll want to own a set for your team just like other good equipment.

Q. How can I make suggestions for rule changes I’d like to see?
A. You can email us. However, realize that there is no such thing as a perfect set of rules. There is no reason that 5 players per team or six balls are ‘better’ than another number. In the same way, the size of a football field, the number of players on a basketball team, or the number of holes in a round of golf is somewhat arbitrary. What IS important is that everybody knows and agrees what the rules are so you can actually play the sport with the least amount of confusion.

Q. How can I get clarification about a rules question?
A. Please contact by email.

Q. Is a referee required to play Roller Dodgeball?
A. No. In the same way that you can play tennis without a referee, you can play Roller Dodge without one. However, a referee should be used for league sanctioned tournaments.
